506. balm and balsam

Both words refer to an aromatic resin from plants, used for medicinal purposes. The most famous balm is that mentioned by Jeremiah: “Is there no balm in Gilead, is there no physician there?” (Jer. 8:22). One source of balsam is a shrub that grows abundantly near the Dead Sea.

507. hyssop

In the Old Testament, this was an herb belonging to the mint family. Its hairy stem holds fluids, and thus the plant was used for sprinkling blood during the Passover rituals (Ex. 12:22; Lev. 14; Heb. 9:19). Yet John 19:29 mentions hyssop used an entirely different way: a sponge filled with wine was placed on hyssop and raised up to Jesus on the cross. The plant experts agree: this had to be a much larger plant than the hyssop mentioned in the Old Testament. The hyssop in John 19:29 may have been a stalk of sorghum cane, which would have been tall enough for the purpose John mentions.
